The translation we use at Mass
The are good reasons to buy the translation that is used in the Lectionary for the readings at Mass. It is a translation chosen by the bishops above all because of its fidelity to the original Hebrew and Greek texts of Scripture. This translation is the English Standard Version- Catholic edition. The English Standard Version is a translation that originally prepared in the United States and included only the books in a Protestant Bible. It is now also used widely in the English speaking Catholic world too. However the Catholic Bible includes a few additional Old Testament Books, omitted in the Protestant Bible. These too have now been translated by the ESV team and are included in the Catholic Edition of the ESV. Finally, there is an anglicised version of the ESV-CE, which replaces the American of splling of words where there is an English alternative, eg ‘Savior’ is replaced by ‘Saviour’. At present the only edition of the anglicised ESV-CE translation is published by SPCK. SPCK publish the text in a series of different sized volumes from a very small pocket sized to a standard -sized which is much easier to read. a variety of editions. These are all listed at https://spckpublishing.co.uk/bibles/esv-bibles Copies of the both the regular and pocket editions are generally on sale in the parish. A Study Bible Many people find it helpful to have a Study Bible. These editions contain the text of the scriptures but also much more extensive foot notes offering background commentary and information. Sadly there is no edition produced for the ESV-CE. The nearest you can get is the study edition of original ESV although this will lack the additional books included in the Cahtolic bible, and it is an edition produced for the Protestant churches. That said the notes are very interesting and full. If you were to buy this I would very strongly suggest buying the large print version (ESV Study Bible, Large Print), as the print size of the notes in the standard version is quite difficult to read! If you wish to buy a Catholic Study Bible then pretty much the best recommendation is the Study edition of the Revised New Jerusalem Bible. |
