The Calendar of an individual church is formed by a bringing together of the General Calendar of the universal Church (comprising the Proper of Time and the Sanctoral Calendar), the National Calendar (namely the Calendar for England); the Archdiocesan Calendar (commemorating saints and blessed of particular significance for the Archdiocese) and the celebrations proper to the individual church.

These latter celebrations are the solemnity of the anniversary of its dedication, if it is consecrated; the solemnity of its title (i.e. the saint the church is named after); the memorial of a saint of blessed whose burial place is in that church.
With the exception of St Chad’s Cathedral, whose solemnity of dedication is kept on June 18th, it is the tradition in the Archdiocese of Birmingham for the solemnity of the dedication of its consecrated churches to be kept on a single day, namely May 29th.

This is a tradition in other dioceses and nations also. The date of May 29th chosen for Birmingham is the date of the consecration of the chapel of Oscott College in 1838. This made the seminary chapel the first place of Catholic worship within the present diocesan boundaries to be consecrated. It is noteworthy that this dedication predates the consecration of St. Chad's cathedral in 1841.
