Sacrament of Reconciliation (COnfession)

On The Sacrament of Reconciliation has an important role to play in the life of the faithful.

In the case of grave sin, it is the Sacrament that restores us to communion with God and the Church, and to again receiving Holy Communion.

When our sins our venial the Sacrament has a valuable role in helping us to respond to the call to holiness and faithfulness.  Many Catholics find it helpful to most regularly celebrate the Sacrament during the seasons of Advent and Lent as they prepare to celebrate the mysteries of Christmas and Easter. And they do this in celebrations of the 2nd form of the Sacrament - making their individual confession after a communal Liturgy of the Word.

There are also other times where our conscience troubles us and we are wearied from struggle with temptation and when we know our need of the benefit of the Sacrament. Then the 1st form of the Sacrament is used, as we come individually to a priest to make our confession and receive the forgiveness of God. (See below right for a guide to this form.)

Our parish has a regular time for Confessions: Saturday 5-5.30. But if that is not suitable for one reason or another another time can easily be arranged with the parish priest, for your convenience.

The Sacrament is not a reward for our virtue, but is a sure source of forgiveness, mercy and healing for our sins. It is the Father's gracious gift ministered through his Son by the Church, called to the ministry of reconciliation.

God, the Father of mercies.
through the death and resurrection of his Son
has reconciled the world to himself
and sent the Holy Spirit among us
for the forgiveness of sins...

Should we commit grave sin then Catholics are bound faithfully to confess their sins at least within the year, though many will want to do so much sooner.
